About the Role

The Murri Court Coordinator aims to provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants appearing before Magistrate courts. The Coordinator is employed by Five Bridges, the auspice body that provides governance, recruitment, and management responsibilities for The Ipswich Community Justice Group.

Five Bridges Pty Ltd is funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DJAG) for the delivery of services under the Community Justice Group program supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contact with the justice system. Five Bridges Pty Ltd has partnered with The Ipswich Community Justice Group to deliver the services within this program and to develop new services and programs that further the aims and objectives of the Ipswich CJG.

Knowledge and Experience Required

  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal in public settings include demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
  • Sound knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire sound knowledge of court processes, legislation, practices, and trends relating to the Criminal Justice System in Queensland.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively perform duties in an organisation, achieving goals and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate meetings and appointments with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of computer technology systems and programs to assist with managing tasks and developing reports.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Prepare and present written/oral sentencing submissions to the courts.
  • Prepare and present written/oral bail submissions to the courts.
  • Attend court sittings to provide assistance to victims and offenders.
  • Link victims with support and legal services.
  • Effectively communicate with court stakeholders, staff, and other major key stakeholders, including DJAG staff and other CJG groups.
  • Facilitate improved links between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and statutory workers, Queensland Police, Courts and other agencies and services that have interactions with the justice system.
  • Organise and arrange meetings with The Ipswich Community Justice Group members and keep true and accurate records of all minutes.
  • Attendance at Community events and network meetings as appropriate.
  • Organise and implement programs in consultation with The Ipswich Community Justice Group and Five Bridges Ltd.
  • Manage, develop, and deliver reports to the department, court staff and Five Bridges Ltd, ensuring accuracy.
  • Work closely with Five Bridges Ltd and The Ipswich Community Justice Group to develop and implement policies.
  • Organise and arrange office to ensure it is kept in a professional manner.
  • Establish and maintain records and filing systems.
  • Ensure ongoing communication between and with Five Bridges and the department.
  • Ensure ongoing communication between and with Five Bridges and The Ipswich Community Justice Group.

  • Coordinate all Murri Court activities, where possible, including Men and Women's Yarning Circles.
  • Coordinate quarterly Murri Court stakeholders meetings.
  • Ensure all key performance indicators are met as set out by Department in the Murri Court Service Agreement including court submissions, court attendance and reporting.
  • Maintain Positive Notice blue card and Criminal History Check (when required)
